Petals Before Midnight

March 11, 2026

with DJ Tea, Mr. Announcer Man & Mickey Fingers

1–3pm CST on WDRT 91.9FM | Listen Live »

By Celeste Violet (DJ Tea) & Mickey Fingers

Petals Before Midnight

This week’s Eclectic Wonderland episode begins innocently enough.

Jangly guitars, dreamy indie melodies, and a few songs that sound like they belong in the background of a road trip movie.

Belle & Sebastian open the door, The Sundays and The Shins keep things warm, and soon we’re drifting through the shimmering haze of Beach House and Slowdive.

But somewhere around the midpoint, Mickey Fingers starts hinting that the afternoon might not stay so innocent.

The guitars grow darker.

The synths pulse a little deeper.

By the time we reach Chromatics, Drab Majesty, and Molchat Doma, it’s clear the day is quietly slipping toward midnight.

And if you listen carefully…

You might hear a whisper about something called Petals & Hooks.

What Crawled Out of the Record Bin This Week

This week’s Eclectic Wonderland show starts sweet and ends suspicious.

Belle & Sebastian and The Sundays open the afternoon with jangly charm before the room slowly fills with dream pop, shoegaze haze, and the occasional questionable life decision.

By the time Drab Majesty, Molchat Doma, and Lebanon Hanover arrive, the mood has shifted from sunshine to something much closer to midnight.

Let’s just say…

If you stay up late enough, you might discover where the petals end and the hooks begin.

Petals & Hooks  – 4-Hour Dark-Wave Ritual Mix

Velvet Umbrella Radio • After Hours with Mickey Fingers & DJ Celeste

A midnight transmission stitched together as one continuous spell: 4 hours of dark-wave, cold-wave, post-punk and shadow-pop—drifting from dreamy noir into full cathedral-in-the-night grandeur.

Hour 1 – Velvet Door Opens

Chromatics glide into Boy Harsher and Lebanon Hanover before Mickey cracks the velvet door and lets Linea Aspera, Cold Cave, The Soft Moon and classic Cure seep through.

Hour 2 – Colder Cities / Cold-Wave Pulse

Molchat Doma, She Past Away, Motorama and Twin Tribes soundtrack snow-lit streets. A quick I.D. and we slam into Sextile, ACTORS and Gary Numan.

Hour 3 – Puppet Master’s Garden

Mickey’s whisper ushers in Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Portishead’s “Machine Gun,” Chelsea Wolfe, Fever Ray and a nine-minute communion with The Sisters of Mercy before Bauhaus and Dead Can Dance pull the veil tighter.

Hour 4 – Smoke, Static & Dawn Never Comes

Joy Division’s “Atmosphere,” Drab Majesty, Cocteau Twins, Twin Tribes, ACTORS and a final run of gothic epics—Sisters’ “Lucretia,” Fields of the Nephilim and Dead Can Dance’s “Host of Seraphim”—carry us to the edge of morning.

Stay awake if you dare; replay if you must.

The Russian track Sudno (Судно) literally means “bedpan” because the song references a Soviet poem about dying in a hospital.

“Fun fact, this next song’s title basically means bedpan… which reminds me of the time I personally fertilized half the rail line between Moscow and Leningrad,”

-Celeste (DJ Tea)
