Untitled No. 2 – Alternate March!

March 6, 2024

Welcome to Untitled No. 2 (Alternate March)—where the songs you know take an unexpected turn! Since it’s an alternate Wednesday, we’re diving into alternate versions of classic tunes: covers, mash-ups, remixes, and parodies galore.

This week leans power pop-heavy, with a side of post-punk and synth-pop flair for that extra sonic punch. Expect plenty of Cheap Trick love, a nod to Material Issue, and a mix of fresh takes on familiar favorites.

🎸 A Special Shoutout

This episode is inspired by the new Johnny Society album, Johnny Society Sings Cheap Trick. A huge thank you to Johnny Society for sending us the CD—it’s a must-hear for Cheap Trick fans!

Also, this episode is dedicated to Jim Ellison of Material Issue, a true power pop icon.

Set your reminders!

Show Notes & The full playlist: {Links Are Pink!}

🚀 The Full Playlist: Alternate Spins & Surprises

🔊 Kicking Things Off

🎶 Skankin’ Pickle – Turning Japanese – What if The Vapors went full ska? Skankin’ Pickle delivers an offbeat, high-energy twist that’ll get you bouncing.

🎶 Pinky Dread – You Get What You Give – A reggae-infused take on New Radicals’ ‘90s classic. Like a beach vacation, but with a dose of existential optimism.

🎶 Johnny Society – Surrender – Cheap Trick gets a gritty, soulful reinvention. It’s raw, passionate, and still totally rock ‘n’ roll.

🎶 Evan Blum & Michelle Raitzin – Endless Sky – A soaring, dreamy soundscape that feels like floating in, well… an endless sky.

🎸 Power Pop & Rock Essentials

🎵 Johnny Society – If You Want My Love – Another Cheap Trick classic, reimagined with a dose of Johnny Society’s signature style.

🎵 Material Issue – Kim the Waitress – Jim Ellison’s power pop brilliance meets a dreamy, slightly psychedelic edge.

🎵 The Quilz – Valerie Loves Me – A shimmering, synth-drenched tribute to Material Issue. Pure magic.

🎵 Pomplamoose – Here It Goes Again – OK Go’s treadmill anthem gets a funky, jazz-infused rework. Less running, more grooving.

🎵 Intoxicats – RAPTURE – Blondie meets tiki-lounge cool. Who knew new wave and exotica could blend so seamlessly?

Genius Of Love

🎵 Motion City Soundtrack – Pop Song 89 – R.E.M. filtered through an early 2000s power pop lens. It’s energetic, punchy, and just the right amount of nostalgic.

🎵 Freedy Johnston – Earn Enough for Us – XTC gets stripped down and reimagined with a warm, folk-rock touch.

🎵 Slothrust – Sex and Candy – Marcy Playground’s slacker anthem gets a heavier, bluesy twist that adds some extra bite.

🎵 OK Go – Gigantic (Pixies Cover) – The quirkiest band covering the Pixies? Yes, please. This version is loud, fun, and just weird enough.

🎵 Johnny Society – Dream Police – More Cheap Trick love! Dreamy, eerie, and packed with rock ‘n’ roll swagger.

🌀 Mash-Ups, Bluegrass Twists & Unexpected Spins

🔀 The Evolution Control Committee – Spandau Filet – What happens when Spandau Ballet meets classic rock riffs? A bizarre, wonderful collision of sound.

🔀 Whiskey Shivers – Buddy Holly – Ever wondered what Buddy Holly would sound like with a punky, bluegrass twist? Now you know.

🔀 Pickin’ On Series – 867-5309/Jenny – Bluegrass meets Tommy Tutone. Jenny’s number has never sounded twangier.

🔀 Pickin’ On Series – All the Small Things – Blink-182 goes Appalachian. Somehow, it works beautifully.

🔀 Luca Stricagnoli – My Sharona – This acoustic guitar wizard turns The Knack’s biggest hit into an instrumental masterpiece.

☕ Indie, New Wave & Synthy Surprises

Susanna Hoffs – Black Coffee In Bed – Squeeze’s classic gets the Hoffs treatment, proving she can make anything sound effortlessly cool.

Fun Boy Three – Our Lips are Sealed – A moody, haunting take on The Go-Go’s bubbly original.

The Pikklesticks – Bohemian Like You – The Dandy Warhols with an extra layer of playful charm.

Ben Folds Five – Video Killed the Radio Star – Nerdy, piano-driven perfection. You can practically hear the smirk behind every note.

Pomplamoose – Walking On Sunshine – A jazzy, unexpected reinvention of the ultimate feel-good anthem.

Rockabye Baby! – Buddy Holly – Because even rock ‘n’ roll legends deserve a lullaby version.

Pete Yorn – Lay Lady Lay – Dylan’s slow burn gets a brooding, indie-folk makeover.

Daniel Ash – Day Tripper – The Bauhaus/Tones on Tail legend takes on The Beatles. Dark, edgy, and completely unexpected.

Love and Rockets – Spanish Stroll – Mink DeVille’s smooth coolness gets a post-punk makeover.

Love and Rockets – Sweet Lover Hangover (Remix) – The already hypnotic track gets even more groove-heavy.

Poptone – No Big Deal – Daniel Ash, Kevin Haskins, and crew proving they’re still effortlessly cool.

Poptone – Ok This Is the Pops – A classic Tones on Tail track, reborn with modern edge.

Marsheaux – Pop Corn – A synth-pop rework of the early electronic instrumental hit. It’s bubbly, quirky, and undeniably catchy.

Marsheaux – The Meaning of Love – A Depeche Mode cover that feels like stepping into a neon-lit dream.
