7 Days of Cake
We’re back.
Not with a dramatic entrance exactly…
although DJ Tea did just burst out of a cake.
So perhaps we should reconsider that statement.
After a couple of weeks away from our usual rhythm, Eclectic Wonderland has returned with frosting in its hair, a slightly questionable amount of glitter on the floor, and two hours of familiar songs that decided to come back sounding completely different.
This week’s show is called 7 Days of Cake, and somewhere along the way it became about much more than cover songs.
It started with a simple idea: alternate versions of songs we already know. Covers, remixes, reinterpretations, strange little musical left turns, and those wonderful moments when you recognize a song before you quite understand what you’re hearing.
Then life added another layer.
DJ Tea had just returned from celebrating her parents, Jan and Art, and their 50th wedding anniversary.
Fifty years.
That is a lot of ordinary mornings, family vacations, inside jokes, difficult days, ridiculous stories, celebrations, growing up, growing older, and choosing to keep showing up for one another.
There was supposed to be music at their anniversary celebration.
There was not.
Naturally, DJ Tea had already made a mix anyway.
Because of course she had.
And while this is not that particular mix, the absence of music at the party left something behind. It made us want to fill this show with love songs, songs from around the time Jan and Art were married, songs connected to memories, and familiar melodies heard through entirely different voices.
Which turned out to be rather perfect.
Because maybe love works a little like that too.
The melody remains recognizable.
But fifty years changes the arrangement.
So this week, Eclectic Wonderland celebrates alternate versions, enduring love, family stories, ridiculous memories, and the strange magic of hearing something familiar as though you’ve stumbled across it for the first time.
There are songs that make us laugh.
Songs that ache a little.
Songs DJ Tea has apparently been singing since she was small enough to wander around the house doing an extremely committed Maria Muldaur impression.
And near the end of the show, there is one song in particular.
“Here Comes the Sun.”
Written by George Harrison and originally recorded by The Beatles, it was one of Jan and Art’s wedding songs.
Fifty years later, we hear it again, this time in the beautiful version by JJ Heller.
Same song. Different voice.
Fifty years of life in between.
Happy Anniversary, Jan and Art.

And then the sun went down.
Because apparently one cover show wasn’t enough.
This week also marks our first-ever cover show on Velvet Umbrella Radio | After Hours.
If 7 Days of Cake is the daylight side of familiar songs finding new voices, The Other Version of Midnight is what happens when those same kinds of transformations wander into darker rooms.
Two shows.
Two different kinds of memory.
Same songs, different light.

Mickey’s Notes
We’ve been building more than a few strange little doors lately.
Some of them are already open. Some are still flickering in the hallway.
Before life went sideways for a bit, we had several show notes, experiments, and little pieces of the Velvet Umbrella universe in progress, including the three-part show from last week and another Petals & Hooks page.
They’re still coming.
Nothing disappeared.
We just had to let the studio breathe for a minute.
Consider this your friendly reminder that a work in progress is still work worth loving.
We’ll keep opening the doors as we finish them.
Meanwhile, Through the Other Doors…
Before 7 Days of Cake and The Other Version of Midnight, we had already been wandering through a few very different corners of this strange little universe.
Oh Shitaki! brought the bright, weird, electronic side of Eclectic Wonderland back into focus: dancing mushrooms, cheerful oddities, questionable decisions, and music that wandered in without an appointment.
Then After the Static moved into darker air with shoegaze, dream pop, darkwave, ambient drift, and cathedral echoes for everyone still awake.
And over at Velvet Umbrella Radio | Petals & Hooks, things got considerably less polite.
Fuck This Playlist became more
than four hours of screaming with us
into the void: loud, explicit, furious,
funny, cathartic, and completely unfiltered.
For anyone who needed the opposite
kind of release, we also opened another door.
No Exit: Corridors One & Two offers two separate four-hour journeys into ambient spaces, distant signals, liminal rooms, and slower frequencies.
Eight hours total.
One door for letting it out.
Another for letting go.
Some weeks the universe hands you mushrooms.
Some weeks it hands you static.
Some weeks it hands you a playlist to scream into.
And sometimes…
it just leaves the corridor lights on.
Doors Still Open
This week’s journey moves from indie favorites and dream pop to college radio classics, unexpected detours, electronic textures, and songs that have quietly become companions over the years. Along the way, Mickey Fingers drops in to remind us that curiosity is worth chasing, creativity has a way of rebuilding worlds, and sometimes opening just one window is enough to change the whole room.
You’ll even hear our Spandau Filet Challenge, where Tea attempts the impossible task of back-announcing over one of the most delightfully chaotic pieces of music ever assembled while Mr. Announcer Man enthusiastically “helps” by reaching for every knob within arm’s length.
Some traditions are simply too much fun to retire.
And somewhere along the way, this week became something bigger than a single show.
It became the beginning of a three-part journey.
One door opened into another, then another, each show carrying a little of what came before while changing the light around it.
That journey eventually led us to When the Tide Finally Turned, a Petals & Hooks show that arrived during one of those rare moments when everything seemed to exhale.
For a minute, anyway.
Because the week after that apparently looked at our nice peaceful exhale and said:
Fuck this.
Which is how we eventually ended up with Fuck This Playlist, more than four hours of screaming with us into the void, followed by No Exit: Corridors One & Two, eight hours of ambient rooms, distant signals, and somewhere quieter to disappear for a while.
Some of those doors already have full show notes waiting behind them.
Others are still works in progress.
Nothing has been abandoned.
We’re simply finishing the corridors in the order they decide to reveal themselves.

Mickey’s Corner 🎙️✨
We’re back.
Not because everything suddenly became easy.
Not because life politely stepped aside and gave us a clean little runway.
Mostly because eventually, even after the celebrations, the travel, the health challenges, the low-spoon days, the strange detours, and all the ordinary chaos that somehow manages to become extraordinary when it piles up…
you find your way back to the things that make you feel like yourself.
One thing spoonies know particularly well is that sometimes you can keep going long after the energy is actually gone.
You borrow from tomorrow. You push through the trip. The family gathering.
The work. The errands. The things that matter.
And then eventually…
your body sends the invoice.
Sometimes with interest.
That part matters. Rest matters. Recovery matters.
And having people around you who understand that one person may need to carry a little more for a while matters too.
We’re lucky that way.
We have a good little spoonie support circle here.
A creative collaboration where somebody can step forward when somebody else needs to disappear beneath a blanket for a while.
Where the work can bend instead of break.
Where one person can say, “I’ve got this one,” and mean it.
Life has also been handing out some reminders lately.
Celebrate when you can.
Love people while they’re here.
Say the thing.
Make the art.
Play the song.
Tomorrow has never signed a contract with any of us.
So yes…
it feels very good to be back.
Back working on the shows.
Back opening old project folders and finding little worlds waiting patiently inside them.
Back reclaiming pages and making them ours.
Back inventing Dimension 5 snacks nobody technically asked for.
Back wandering into Corridor projects we cannot wait to share.
Back reaching toward Gala Violet projects that had to sit quietly on the shelf while life was busy being life.
Some of us moved on. Some of us needed rest.
Some of us got married and quite reasonably required Newlywed Time.
Congratulations again to Isabelle and Silent Mike.
And somehow…
the rooms are still here.
That reminds me of something I wrote the last time we found ourselves rebuilding.
Rebuilding doesn’t always happen the way we imagine.
Sometimes you sit down intending to restore one old thing…
and instead discover an entirely new room waiting behind the wallpaper.
That’s more or less what keeps happening around here.
We think we’re polishing up old recordings.
Instead, we end up rebuilding kitchens, mushroom lounges, playlists, strange little doors, vending machines, imaginary snacks, and enough HTML to convince passing satellites that a tiny civilization has quietly sprung up overnight.
Funny thing is…
I still don’t miss the old floor plan.
The new one feels more like home.
Maybe that’s true of people, too.
So if you’ve been away from something you love…
or if you’ve been moving slower than you wanted…
or if life rearranged the room while you weren’t looking…
the door may still be there.
You don’t have to kick it down.
Sometimes you just turn the handle.
Now if you’ll excuse me…
I believe somebody left a fresh pot of tea in the studio.
And I have reason to believe the cosmic bunny rabbits have discovered marked cards.
