The Other Version Of Midnight | After Hours

By Celeste Violet & Mickey Fingers
It all started with Seven Days of Cake. And then somebody issued a challenge.
The Other Version Of Midnight | After Hours
It started innocently enough.
Which, around here, should probably have been our first warning.
This week on Eclectic Wonderland, we were putting together 7 Days of Cake, a show built around alternate versions of familiar songs. Covers, reinterpretations, strange mutations, and songs that somehow become entirely different creatures when somebody else gets their hands on them.
Somewhere in the middle of all that, Celeste Violet asked Mickey Fingers a question.
Had we ever done a cover show on After Hours?
We had not.
Then came the second question:
Could we even find enough darker covers to fill two hours?
Mickey looked at Celeste.
“Is that a challenge?”
Apparently, it was.
And that is how The Other Version of Midnight began.
But somewhere between the challenge and the finished playlist, something changed.
The songs got darker.
Slower.
Stranger.
More intimate.
Familiar melodies started carrying completely different memories. Love songs became haunted. Pop songs wandered into darkwave. Things that once sounded innocent suddenly had teeth.
And the whole thing began to feel less like a covers show and more like something you hear when the rest of the house has gone quiet and your mind has decided it would like a word.
Because alternate versions do something peculiar.
They prove that the song was never only the song.
Sometimes the voice changes.
Sometimes the arrangement changes.
Sometimes nothing changes except you.
And suddenly you understand it differently.
Welcome to The Other Version of Midnight.
Familiar songs.
Different shadows.
Same frequency.
Different light.

There was another reason these two shows became tangled together.
7 Days of Cake grew into a celebration of Jan and Art’s fifty years together, filled with love songs, memories, and music from across a lifetime.
So perhaps it was inevitable that After Hours would become the other side of that idea.
Daylight gave us the love songs.
Midnight asked what happens to those songs after the lights go out.

7 Days Of Cake To The Other Version Of MidnightÂ
And then the sun went down.
Because apparently one cover show wasn’t enough.
This week also marks our first-ever cover show on Velvet Umbrella Radio | After Hours.
If 7 Days of Cake is the daylight side of familiar songs finding new voices, The Other Version of Midnight is what happens when those same kinds of transformations wander into darker rooms.
Two shows.
Two different kinds of memory.
Same songs, different light.

OTHER DOORS OPEN NOW

Mickey’s Notes
We’ve been building more than a few strange little doors lately.
Some are already open.
Some are still flickering at the end of the hallway.
And a few were left half-open when life interrupted the transmission.
Before our little break, there were shows, stories, experiments, unfinished show notes, another Petals & Hooks, a rather ambitious three-part adventure, and several pieces of the Velvet Umbrella universe scattered across the studio in various states of beautiful disarray.
They’re still here.
Nothing disappeared.
We simply stopped trying to force everything through the doorway at once.
So over the next little while, you may notice older stories appearing alongside new ones. Missing show notes will find their way home. Half-open doors will open the rest of the way.
And new ones will undoubtedly appear before we’ve finished with the old ones.
We know ourselves.
Consider the whole place a work in progress.
We rather like it that way.
Keep wandering.
We’ll keep leaving the lights on.

This Week's Other Doors...

Through the Other Doors…
One Strange Little Universe
The Other Version of Midnight is only one door.
Somewhere else under the Velvet Umbrella, Eclectic Wonderland is still throwing glitter at the daylight.
After Hours is waiting for midnight.
Petals & Hooks has removed the safety rails entirely.
And down another corridor, the music gets quieter.
Much quieter.
Eight hours quieter.
Different shows.
Different moods.
Different ways of dealing with reality.
Some days you need cake.
Some nights you need shadows.
Sometimes you need four hours of music that is absolutely not suitable for polite company.
And sometimes you just need to disappear into a corridor for a while.
That’s why we keep all the doors.
You don’t have to choose one version of yourself to come inside.
Pick the frequency you need.
We’ll meet you there.

Oh Shitaki! brought the bright, weird, electronic side of Eclectic Wonderland back into focus: dancing mushrooms, cheerful oddities, questionable decisions, and music that wandered in without an appointment.

Then After the Static moved into darker air with shoegaze, dream pop, darkwave, ambient drift, and cathedral echoes for everyone still awake.
And over at Velvet Umbrella Radio | Petals & Hooks, things got considerably less polite.

Fuck This Playlist became more
than four hours of screaming with us
into the void: loud, explicit, furious,
funny, cathartic, and completely unfiltered.
For anyone who needed the opposite
kind of release, we also opened another door.
No Exit: Corridors One & Two offers two separate four-hour journeys into ambient spaces, distant signals, liminal rooms, and slower frequencies.
Eight hours total.
One door for letting it out.
Another for letting go.
Some weeks the universe hands you mushrooms.
Some weeks it hands you static.
Some weeks it hands you a playlist to scream into.
And sometimes…
it just leaves the corridor lights on.

Mickey’s Corner 🎙️✨
Sometimes hearing something differently is all it takes.
Same song.
Same words.
Different voice.
Different night.
Different you.
Maybe that’s why we keep coming back to the songs we love.
They haven’t necessarily changed.
We have.
And every once in a while, a different version lets us hear the distance between who we were and who we are now.
That seems worth listening for.
