Let's Get Weird {Audities}

Updated: Apr 2

Let’s Get Weird – March 27, 2024

Ever wake up, look outside, and question reality before coffee kicks in? Yeah, me too. One minute, you’re in that dreamy in-between state where the world is half-formed… and the next, a house is driving down the street. (Still not entirely convinced I wasn’t hallucinating.)

That moment—combined with a relentless earworm by The Great Luke Ski—was the spark for this show. Oh, and let’s not forget a photography class assignment that once terrified and confused my instructor (shoutout to Tom, who affectionately dubbed me his wild one).

It’s been one of those weeks. My body and I are not on speaking terms, food is the enemy, and I probably should’ve been in the hospital. But instead, I was here, making an Audities Show—a mix of novelty, experimental, and sound-collage weirdness, all very much in the spirit of Dr. Demento.

And because this week was extra weird, we had a world premiere from Beachfront Vinny, featuring yours truly—DJ Tea—and, of course, the legendary Mr. Announcer Man. Chicky Boom!

So buckle up, buttercup—it’s time to get really  weird.

Show Notes & The full playlist: {Links Are Pink!}

First Set: Opening the Portal to Weirdness

The Great Luke Ski – Everybody Get Weird (feat. Art Paul Schlosser) [Remix]

Theme song for this episode because… well, obviously.

John W. Christensen – I Get Weird (2010 Remaster)

If you don’t relate to this song, you’re listening to the wrong show.

Tones On Tail – Slender Fungus

Sounds like something that would play in a club full of supernatural creatures drinking glowing cocktails.

Raymond Scott, Go Home Productions, The Bran Flakes & The Evolution Control Committee – Powerhouse

A fever dream of sound. Also, if robots had anxiety, this would be their theme song.

Second Set: Drifting into a Parallel Dimension

• David J & Tim Newman – Raintown

A poetic journey through an imaginary rainy town where time is… optional.

• King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Dreams (feat. Yu Su)

Music to astral project to.

• David J & Tim Newman – All Colours of Earth

A psychedelic hug in audio form.

• I Monster – Colourspill

Ever watched paint drip in slow motion? That, but music.

• David J & Tim Newman – Entering the Underworld

Nothing ominous about that title, nope, not at all.

David J Bandcamp

• Whitewoods – When Cameron Was in Egypt’s Land

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but make it existential.

• Bruce Haack – Captain Entropy

If a children’s TV host from another galaxy taught physics.

• Wax Tailor – Fear of a Blind Planet

A hauntingly smooth track that sounds like a secret agent mission gone wrong.

Negativland – There Is No Planet

A reminder that reality is just a suggestion.

• Elliott Smith – Ostrich and Chirping

Yes, you read that correctly. It’s Elliott Smith… but, like, experimental.

• Negativland – Either Or

A sound collage that makes you question everything. And nothing.

• Negativland – Don’t Don’t Get Freaked Out

Advice that is impossible to follow while listening to this.

• Asteroid City Cast – Dear Alien (Who Art In Heaven)

Wes Anderson meets a UFO cult.

• Donzii – Crash Landing (Mr Twin Sister Remix)

If disco and a dystopian sci-fi film had a baby.

• POW! – Dream Decay

If dreams decayed like overripe fruit, this is how they would sound. {I can't really explain it, but I consulted AI, and this was its best suggestion.}

• The Evolution Control Committee – Spandau Filet

More samples than a Costco on a Saturday afternoon.

Third Set: The Weirdness Intensifies

• I Monster – The Weather

Not an actual weather report, but it should be.

• Seksu Roba – Telephone

The soundtrack to waiting on hold in another dimension.

• Geneva Jacuzzi – Casket

Glamorous, eerie, and probably a vampire’s favorite song.

• People Soup & I Monster – Come Out Biting

The perfect song to play before a zombie apocalypse.

People Soup {Bandcamp}

• Snakefinger – Smelly Tongues

If you know, you know. If you don’t… brace yourself.

• The Spleen Orchestra – Beetlejuice

The circus is in town, and it’s haunted.

Fourth Set: Existential Breakdance Party

• Ratatat – Mandy

Instrumental bliss with just enough groove to keep you grounded.

• Love and Rockets – God and Mr. Smith

Like getting life advice from a mystical beat poet.

• The Bubblemen – The Bubblemen Are Coming

They warned us. We didn’t listen. {This video and song have always been a favorite of mine} HurRaY!

• Brian Eno – The Big Ship

Pure atmosphere. Feels like floating through space.

• Beachfront Vinny – Pre Chicky Boom Intro

A dramatic lead-up to the main event.

• Beachfront Vinny, Sgt. Montgomery F. Bates, Princess Daverino, Buddy Daverino & Mike “Tough Guy” McGhee – Chicky Boom (feat. DJ Tea, Mr. Announcer Man & Alan “Jax” Bowers)

An absolute fever dream. And I was in it.
